How the funding rate works

The funding rate is a periodic payment between long and short traders on perpetual futures. When it is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. Extreme funding shows which side is crowded and paying to hold leverage.

FAQ

What is the funding rate?

The funding rate is the fee perpetual futures traders exchange, usually every 8 hours, to keep the contract price anchored to the spot index price.

Why do funding rates differ between exchanges?

Each exchange calculates funding from its own premium between the perpetual and the index, so positioning on one venue can be more crowded than on another.
